Essential Fatty Acids
The essential fatty acids (EFA) include linolenic (Omega-6), linolenic (Omega-3) arachidonic, which are sometimes collectively referred to as vitamin F. EFAs are essential for normal growth. They are major components of the cell membranes and function in energy production, steroid synthesis and can keep the skin and tissues youthful due to their lubricating quality.
A balance of fatty acids is essential. Allergic eczema is believed by some to be caused by an imbalance of fatty acids in the body the literature supports that a host of diseases, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, allergic eczema, cancer, premature aging, chronic inflammation in auto immune disorders are related to an imbalance of fatty acids in the body.
Fish oils are comprised mostly of docosahexanoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These are highly unsaturated fatty acids.
Fish oil has many beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. More recent studies have shown positive effects on myocardial function and blood pressure. EFAs are important for optimal maturation of visual and cortical (brain) function in the preterm infants.
